As most cinephiles prepare to welcome 2024 with a plethora of highly anticipated films coming their way soon, John Waters — a renowned auteur in the movie industry — has provided his Top 10 list of must-watch features of 2023. 

Best known for his work in the controversial 1982 black comedy Pink Flamingos and the 1988 comedy Hairspray, Waters has established himself as a filmmaker who is not afraid to explore the transgressive side of cinema. His directorial credits include Multiple Maniacs, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Polyester, Cry-Baby, Serial Mom, Pecker, and Cecil B. Demented. 

Most of his films received critical acclaim (though some garnered divisive opinions) and have cemented Water’s name as one of the greatest filmmakers in the film industry. So while 2023 has been a fruitful year for cinema, the director (via Vulture) shared the ten provocative and widely intriguing movies of 2023 — as is typical Waters fashion.

Though fans are rejoicing for the imminent return of Night Court on January 2, 2024, the team will be missing a major member. Deadline has reported that Kapil Talwalkar, who played court clerk Neil in the NBC sitcom, won’t be returning for Season 2. 

The reason for Talwalkar’s exit from the show has not been revealed yet, but — according to Deadline — the second season will be faithful to the original Night Court, which ran from 1984 to 1992. The actor’s exit was, of course, sad news for fans of the show considering his significant role in Judge Abby Stone’s (Melissa Rauch) court.

The Night Court revival was an instant hit

Despite its big shoes to fill, the revival of the hit NBC series debuted to strong viewership and favorable critical reception. It follows Raunch’s Abby Stone as she follows in the footsteps of her father, Judge Harry Stone, a lead character from the original series portrayed by Harry Anderson.

The official synopsis for Night Court reads: “Unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone, the daughter of the late Harry Stone, follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding.”

Created by Reinhold Weege, the show’s cast also includes India de Beaufort as Olivia Moore, Lacretta as Gurgs Gurganous, John Larroquette as Dan Fielding, Pete Holmes as Rand, and Gary Anthony Williams as Judge Flobert.

In addition to starring as the lead character, Raunch also serves as the show’s executive producer alongside Dan Rubin and Winston Rauch. Night Court is produced by Warner Bros. Television in association with After January Productions and Universal Television.

Night Court Season 1 is available to stream on Peacock, with Season 2 premiering on January 2, 2024.

The fourth season of Evil is shaping up to be spookier and weirder. TVLine has shared exclusive images from Evil Season 4, showing what Dr. Kristen Bouchard, David Acosta, and Ben Shakir have been up to since Season 3 concluded with quite the revelation. 

The supernatural drama thriller ran on CBS in 2019 during its first season. It was then renewed for Season 2 at Paramount+ in 2021, becoming exclusive content for the streamer through Season 3. The show features a star-studded cast, including Katja Herbers as forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard, Mike Colter as former journalist David Acosta, and Aasif Mandvi as contractor and devil’s advocate Ben Shakir.

When is Evil Season 4 coming out?

Filming on Evil Season 4 began earlier this year, though production was disrupted due to the now-ended Hollywood strikes at the time. No exact release date has been set yet for the fourth season, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.

Evil revolves around Dr. Kristen Bouchard, a forensic psychologist, who — despite her doubts and skepticism — solves supernatural-related crimes alongside David Acosta.

Ridley Scott’s latest film project, Napoleon, has just surpassed a massive global box office milestone. It’s sailed past the $200 million mark, including Tuesday’s figures. 

According to Deadline, the Joaquin Phoenix-led biopic has earned $200.7 million worldwide, with $141.1 million coming from international box office sales.

Napoleon marks Phoenix and Scott’s latest project together 

After previously working together in the 2000 historical drama Gladiator, Phoenix and the director have once again joined forces for another epic. Napoleon, which ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim described as an unforgettable epic from the director, follows the rise and fall of the controversial historical figure Napoleon Bonaparte.

The synopsis for Napoleon reads: “Napoleon is a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.”

Funko has released two new miniature Pop! figures inspired by Scott Derrickson’s 2021 horror mystery The Black Phone, featuring two versions of the film’s terrifying serial killer, The Grabber. 

The first collection features the villain wearing his customary mask, which retails for $12.00. It also comes with a rare version of The Grabber without a hat. The second collection depicts The Grabber as a blood-soaked villain. Called the Red Molding, the figure stands approximately 4 inches tall and costs $15.00.

The Black Phone gets promising update

Based on Joe Hill’s short story, The Black Phone centers on 13-year-old Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), who was kidnapped by a sadistic child killer (Ethan Hawke) and left behind in a soundproof basement. 

A few months after it was revealed that The Black Phone was returning for a sequel, the returning cast for The Black Phone 2 was unveiled. This includes Hawke, Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora. It was also previously reported that the first movie’s director and co-writers, Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, are returning for the horror sequel. 

“The film tells the story of Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney,” the official synopsis reads.

Michael Mann’s latest film, Ferrari, based on the titular luxurious Italian car company, has its fair share of thrilling racing sequences. However, nothing quite compares to the film’s final moments, which depicted the dreadful true story of the 1957 Mille Miglia crash. While the ending was already horrifying in and of itself, the director explains that they actually tried to tone it down a little bit. 

The film, starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, ended with one of Ferrari’s drivers losing control of his car, which resulted in a number of corpses lying on the street. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mann shared that he wanted to depict the 1957 Mille Miglia crash as factually as possible while trying to reduce the intensity of the scenes. 

“I toned down one or two pieces of what happened. Out of respect, I wanted to shoot it very factually, as if we were a newsreel camera who saw this coming and just followed it. No multiple cuts, which I thought would’ve been gratuitous,” Mann told EW. 

He continued, “There were many different accounts of what happened in that crash. A gentleman at the Ferrari factory named Gabriele Lolli, who’s one of the people who run their restoration division, went to the prefecture and dug up all the police reports. He investigated the accident for three years. It’s the most detailed forensic examination you can imagine, and that’s how we knew exactly what happened: that the tire got punctured, that it hit a mile marker that launched the car in the air, that it was doing between 140 and 160 when it hit a telephone pole.”

On the driver Alfonso de Portago’s severed body, which Gabriel Leone played in the movie, Mann added: “The wires may have severed his body. We’re not sure how that happened, but they found his body in three pieces. That’s also typically what happens to the human anatomy in an airplane disaster because there’s not that much connecting your thorax to your pelvis.”

Ferrari tells the true story of Enzo’s personal and professional life

As Enzo Ferrari navigates both his personal and professional life, Ferrari also features the death of his son Dino Ferrari, his deteriorating relationship with his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz), his struggles to acknowledge his son with his mistress Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley), and the imminent bankruptcy of his company. 

The official synopsis for Ferrari reads: “It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.”

The rest of the Ferrari cast includes Patrick Dempsey as Piero Taruffi, Sarah Gadon as Linda Christian, Jack O’Connell as Peter Collins, Michele Savoia as Carlo Chiti, and Ben Collins as Stirling Moss.

After spending much of his time creating family-friendly movies like Peter Rabbit and Annie, Will Gluck — the filmmaker behind two beloved romantic comedies, Friends with Benefits and Easy A — has recently returned to his rom-com roots with Anyone But You. On his latest project, Gluck shares that he wanted it to be “big and epic,” and one that will guarantee audiences a good time.

While Gluck’s rom-com features in the early 2010s garnered massive followings, audiences have certainly changed over the past decade. And that is why, for him, it is a “huge obligation” to come up with a movie that will give moviegoers a good experience.

“I really did feel a huge obligation to maybe make the last romcom in the history of cinema and theatricality. I really wanted this to feel big and epic and musical and funny and sexy and edgy and adult in order to get people to experience it in the theater with their friends and their dates,” Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter. 

He added, “I sound like a pitchman, but I guarantee that when you walk out of this movie, you will have had a good, fun experience, which romcoms always deliver. We need a fun movie, especially now, and this is a fun movie.”

What is Anyone But You about?

Based on a screenplay Gluck co-wrote with Ilana Wolpert, Anyone But You stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as two pretend lovers who would rather be with anyone but each other. 

The synopsis for Anyone But You reads: “After an amazing first date, Bea and Ben’s fiery attraction turns ice cold – until they find themselves unexpectedly reunited at a destination wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple.”

Thanksgiving debuted to great success 

While there have been a slew of slasher flicks over the past decades, Roth has managed to satisfy the viewer’s palate with the release of Thanksgiving on November 17, 2023. The film has garnered more than $45 million at the global box office against a $15 million budget. Due to its success, Roth has announced that they are already cooking up a sequel. 

“John Carver will kill again! [Thanksgiving] sequel is a [go!],” Roth wrote on Instagram. “Go see it now on the big screen while it’s in cinemas, sequel set for release in 2025! Taking a year to really get the script right, working on it starting today!”

What is Thanksgiving about?

A long-overdue project that had been sitting in the oven for quite a long time, the feature-length expansion of Roth’s project first appeared as a fake trailer for 2007’s Grindhouse Double Feature. The film centers on an axe-wielding killer who terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts’ residents after a Black Friday riot ended in a blood-filled tragedy. 

The film stars Nell Verlaque as Jessica, Addison Rae as Gabby, Patrick Dempsey as Sheriff Eric Newlon, Rick Hoffman as Thomas Wright, Jalen Thomas Brooks as Bobby, Milo Manheim as Ryan, and Gina Gershon as Amanda Collins, among others. 

The synopsis for Thanksgiving reads as follows: “After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts — the birthplace of the holiday. Picking off residents one by one, what begins as random revenge killings are soon revealed to be part of a larger, sinister holiday plan. The second season of the horror comedy Shining Vale will be its last, Starz announced. Aside from not renewing the series for Season 3, all two seasons of the Courteney Cox-led series will also be removed from the streaming platform at the end of the year. 

According to an insider close to the network (via Variety), the show did not garner “a large enough audience” for it to warrant a Season 3 order. 

What is Shining Vale about?

Created by Astrof and Sharon Horgan, Shining Vale follows a married couple from Brooklyn who relocate to a fictional old Victorian mansion in Connecticut. Currently on the brink of their marriage, the house — which used to be an asylum for women — appears to be haunted, at least for Pat Phelps (Cox). Unhappy with her current life, mental health issues also run in Pat’s family history. 

The official synopsis for Shining Vale reads: “A dysfunctional family moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Patricia “Pat” Phelps, who’s convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same.”

The second season picked up where the first season left off, throwing Pat into a psychiatric hospital for trying to murder her family. The entire Phelps family starts to experience an otherworldly presence while Pat battles demons of her own. 

The rest of the Shining Vale cast includes Greg Kinnear as Terry Phelps, Dylan Gage as Jake Phelps, Gus Birney as Gaynor Phelps, Merrin Dungey as Kam, and Mira Sorvino, who plays multiple characters such as Rosemary Wellingham, Ruth Levin, and Nellie Burke.

The ambiguous conclusion of Sam Esmail’s latest project, Leave the World Behind, has left audiences divided. Nevertheless, the filmmaker is clear about the direction he wants to take the movie, stating that he intended for it to end in a “provocative way.”

Based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name, Leave the World Behind follows a family of four as they spend their weekend in a luxurious AirBNB home. However, their idyllic vacation soon comes to a halt when two strangers who claim to be the homeowners deliver shocking news. This forces the two families to live together as they unravel the mystery behind the strange happenings.

During the film’s final moments, a series of eerie events start to occur all at once, though what transpires after remains unknown. The film ended with Friends-obsessed Rosie (Farrah Mackenzie) watching the show’s final episode in someone else’s basement bunker, concluding the film with “I’ll Be There For You” playing in the background. 

Considering the film didn’t provide some sort of explanation about what happened after, audiences’ opinions about the film are — of course — divided. But Esmail knew it was going to happen, and he didn’t want to end his film any other way.

“We knew going into this that the ending was going to be polarizing, but we did not want to pull punches on it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think in a traditional disaster film, a genre that I’m a huge fan of, so no knock on disaster films — I mean, Day after Tomorrow is one of my favorite movies — but the expectation is at the end of these films, your cast of characters overcomes the disaster and the world reverts back to some sane semblance of normalcy. I knew that I wasn’t going to do that.” 

He added, “As a film lover, I’m excited when I leave a movie wanting to spend hours talking about it. And when you end a film with sort of a pat answer, where the heroes do overcome something, those tend to be the movies where they kind of come and go … so we knew making this film that we wanted to go in this provocative way, and we assumed the risk that it would divide people — and hopefully in a good way, because that provokes conversation.”

Who stars in Leave the World Behind? 

Besides Mackenzie, the apocalyptic thriller boasts an impressive cast, including Julia Roberts as Amanda, Ethan Hawke as Clay, Mahershala Ali as G.H., Myha’la as Ruth, Kevin Bacon as Danny, and Charlie Evans as Archie.

More than 19 years after the original Mean Girls dominated North Shore High School back in 2004, a new generation of Plastics will carry their legacy. Scheduled for theatrical release on January 12, 2024, Entertainment Weekly has shared exclusive images from the upcoming musical remake of the classic teen flick. 

Over the past few days, a number of sneak peeks, posters, and photos have emerged to heighten the anticipation for the upcoming Mean Girls remake. To “make fetch happen” even more, the newly released images feature the modern take on the so-called “jungle” that is North Shore High School, as well as new faces rounding out the cast.

What is Mean Girls about?

Directed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne, the synopsis for Mean Girls reads: “New student Cady Heron is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called ‘The Plastics,’ ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George and her minions Gretchen and Karen. However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis and Damian, she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.”

The controversial Batman parody The People’s Joker, which previously made headlines after getting pulled from the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) lineup, will soon head to the big screen. Per Variety’s report, the queer comic book parody will hit cinemas on April 5, 2024.

Directed by Vera Drew (Our Bodies), The People’s Joker was poised to grace TIFF in 2022. However, the filmmaker canceled the film’s screenings due to “rights issues.”

“The filmmaker has withdrawn this film due to rights issues. We apologize for any inconvenience. Current ticket holders will receive an email from TIFF Customer Relations with information on their purchase,” the TIFF statement reads.

Warner Bros. Discovery, who holds the rights to the Batman franchise, never released a statement about the Batman parody. 

Now, with issues seemingly resolved, LA-based distributor Altered Innocence has acquired the rights to the film and is set to release it in American theaters. 

What is The People’s Joker about? 

In a statement, the film’s director said that The People’s Joker “started as a D.I.Y. community project for queer artists.” Starring Drew as the aspiring clown named Joker the Harlequin, The People’s Joker — billed as an “absurdist semi-autobiographical dark comedy,” according to Variety — is a queer-themed parody film chronicling the main lead’s journey forming an illegal anti-comedy team. 

“Vera Drew has taken her own life experiences and traumas to craft an entirely new genre of cinema that blurs the lines between documentary, coming-of-age film, and parody,” Altered Innocence founder Frank Jaffe told Variety. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to champion this bold, intelligent and hilarious piece of queer cinema that audiences around the globe have fallen in love with.”

The film also features appearances from Maria Bamford, Scott Aukerman, Bob Odenkirk, and Tim Heidecker.

The People’s Joker premieres on April 5, 2024.

Netflix has released the trailer for the second season of Love on the Spectrum U.S., highlighting the new dating hopefuls joining the second season of the Emmy award-winning docu-reality series. It is set to hit the streamer on January 19, 2024.

What is Love on the Spectrum U.S. about?

A U.S. version of Australian’s reality television show of the same name, Love on the Spectrum is produced by Northern Pictures, with Cian O’Clery serving as the series’ co-creator. The first season, which debuted last year, saw seven American adults on the autism spectrum explore the complex and unpredictable world of dating and relationships. Love on the Spectrum U.S. is also produced by Northern Pictures. 

Per the reality show’s synopsis, Love on the Spectrum U.S. “is an insightful and warm-hearted series following people on the autism spectrum as they navigate the world of dating and relationships.”

The Season 2 logline reads: “In its second season, this U.S. based series tells the stories of a unique and diverse cast of characters — including new romantic hopefuls and familiar faces — searching for something we all hope to find, love.”

Love on the Spectrum U.S., similar to its predecessor, has received recognition upon its release. Thus far, the show has three Emmy awards under its belt, winning the Outstanding Casting For A Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing For An Unstructured Reality Program, and Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program categories.

Love on the Spectrum U.S. Season 2 premieres on Netflix on January 19, 2024.

This one is definitely not made for kids. An all-new South Park special has just dropped on Paramount+, titled South Park: Not Suitable for Children. The streamer has also released the teaser trailer for the animated sitcom’s new special, highlighting the parents’ concern over a certain teacher’s online presence, which is apparently “not suitable for children.”

The new South Park special spoofs a popular adult content creation platform called OnlyFans, where various adult influencers share mature content for their paying subscribers. 

South Park: Not Suitable for Children is now streaming on Paramount+, available for subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. According to Variety, the special will be available internationally on December 21 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The show will also be available to stream in Italy on December 23.

Shortly after Charles Melton received praise and recognition for his portrayal of Joe in Netflix’s May December, the actor reflected on his experience in Riverdale, saying that The CW show served as his learning ground.

The 32-year-old actor first received mainstream attention back in 2017 when he played Reggie Mantle in the second season of Riverdale, replacing Season 1 actor Ross Butler. But while the show based on Archie Comics has received mixed reception since its debut in 2017, Melton used his time on the series to hone his acting abilities. 

“Obviously, it frees up more time for projects like May December, but I learned so much being there. I formed relationships that I will have until the end of my days. It really helped me refine this work ethic,” Melton told i-D. “Riverdale truly was my Juilliard — I was learning and growing and playing and taking risks. I was allowed to do that. We just had our final season, so you know, it’s … bittersweet. But I’m so happy it brought joy to so many people.”

May December helped Charles Melton’s career reach new heights 

Melton had been in Riverdale for the past seven years. During his time on The CW show, which concluded in August 2023, the actor went on to appear in various films and television shows like The Sun Is Also a Star, Bad Boys for Life, Heart of Champions, and American Horror Story: Hotel before ultimately landing the Joe role in the Netflix film. 

Due to his impressive performance, Melton received a Best Supporting Actor award at the Gotham Awards and a Golden Globe nomination for the Best Supporting Actor category. 

May December is a Todd Haynes-directed film loosely based on the life of Mary Kay Letourneau and the shocking tabloid scandal that occurred in the late 1990s. In the film, Melton plays 36-year-old Joe Yoo, who started dating 36-year-old Gracie when he was just 13.

“Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under the pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past,” the synopsis for May December reads. 

Starring alongside Melton are Julianne Moore as Gracie, Natalie Portman as Elizabeth, Gabriel Chung as Charlie, Piper Curda as Honor, Elizabeth Yu as Mary, Cory Michael Smith as Georgie, and D. W. Moffett as Tom.

The sixth season of FX’s original comedy horror series What We Do in the Shadows will be its final season. The report (via Vulture) came a few months after the Season 5 finale. No release date has been set yet for Season 6, though it is expected to premiere sometime in 2024. 

The vampires say goodbye to Staten Island

Created by Jemaine Clement and based on the 2014 film he created alongside Taika Waititi, What We Do in the Shadows is a mockumentary-style series following the nightly adventures of vampire roommates Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) as they plan to take over Staten Island with the help of their human familiar Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén). 

The official synopsis for What We Do in the Shadows reads: “A documentary-style look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of a group of vampires in Staten Island who have “lived” together for hundreds and hundreds of years.”

The series, which debuted to critical acclaim back in 2019, has earned a number of Emmy nominations and has won a GLAAD Media Award for the Best Comedy Series category. 

While plot details for Season 6 remain under wraps, it is expected to expound on what happened to Guillermo during Season 5 after his struggles with having been turned partly vampiric, with Laszlo using his blood to do some grim experiments.

FX previously renewed the series through Season 6 back in 2022. 

What We Do in the Shadows is executive produced by Clement, Waititi, Paul Simms, Stefani Robinson, Sam Johnson, Garrett Basch, and Eli Bush. The series is produced by FX Productions.

Lionsgate has released the trailer for its coming-of-age period drama White Bird, based on R. J. Palacio’s best-selling graphic novel Wonder. The movie will have its theatrical debut on October 4, 2024.

White Bird serves as a spin-off sequel to the 2017 film Wonder, which is also based on Palacio’s novel of the same name. A forthcoming feature billed as “an uplifting movie about how one act of kindness can live on forever,” White Bird chronicles the story of Julian’s (played by Bryce Gheisar) grandmother, Sara Albans (Helen Mirren), and how she led a brave life by choosing kindness. 

Intending to transform her grandson’s life, who just got expelled from school due to his treatment of Auggie Pullman (a character who appeared in the 2017 film adaptation starring Jacob Tremblay), she started to reveal her own story of courage during her early years.

White Bird encourages everyone to always “choose kind”

According to the film’s official synopsis, White Bird follows “Julian (Gheisar), who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie Pullman. To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother (Mirren) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, a boy shelters her from mortal danger. They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson) risks everything to keep her safe.”

White Bird is directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland), with Mark Bomback serving as the upcoming film’s screenwriter. 

Besides The Astronaut’s Gheisar and The Queen’s Mirren, White Bird also stars Gillian Anderson (Sex Education) as Vivienne, Ariella Glaser (Radioactive) as the young Sara, and Orlando Schwerdt (True History of the Kelly Gang) as Julien.

Ahead of the December 20 release of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the cast and crew behind the series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s best-selling novel series discussed the inspiration behind the show in a newly released featurette.

In the clip, the author behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians shared how he came up with the story. He revealed that it all started as a bedtime story for his young son, who was struggling at school due to dyslexia and ADHD. 

“The one thing he did love was Greek mythology. So I started telling him stories from the Greek myths. When I ran out of the old stuff, I made up a new Greek hero,” said Riordan. 

As the series prepares for its Disney+ debut, Walker Scobell — who will play Percy Jackson in the series — also introduced his character in the recently released clip alongside Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries, both of whom will play Grover and Annabeth, respectively.

What can we expect from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV adaptation?

The novel was first adapted into a 20th Century Fox’s film series starring Logan Lerman as the titular character. Lerman has recently shared his sentiments about the series adaptation, saying that the “the show looks amazing” and that he “can’t imagine a better fit for Percy Jackson than [Scobell].” 

The synopsis for the upcoming series reads: “Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.”

Directed by James Bobin and based on a screenplay co-written by Riordan and Jon Steinberg, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series also stars Charlie Bushnell as Luke Castellan, Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse La Rue, Olivea Morton as Nancy Bobofit, Glynn Turman as Chiron, Timm Sharp as Gabe Ugliano, Virginia Kull as Sally Jackson, and Megan Mullally as Mrs. Dodds.

Rounding out the cast are Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes, Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysus, Adam Copeland as Ares, Timothy Omundson as Hephaestus, Jay Duplass as Hades, Toby Stephens as Poseidon, and the late Lance Reddick as Zeus.

Set to give a fresh spin on Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel, Lisa Frankenstein is described as a “coming-of-rage love story” about a young woman who has a crush on a handsome corpse. Scheduled for a theatrical release on February 9, 2024, a new image has been released (via Empire), highlighting the gothic romance between Kathryn Newton’s Lisa Swallows and Cole Sprouse’s Victorian corpse. 

Along with previously unveiled photos and a trailer released back in October, the new image sets the tone for the forthcoming horror comedy. You can check out the image below:

Lisa Frankenstein is shaping up to be another hit horror comedy

While it is still too early to assume how the story will fare once it hits theaters next year, the horror comedy genre has seen a fair amount of favorable attention from critics and audiences alike. 

Following a similar concept to Shelley’s Frankenstein, the film is written by Diablo Cody — the writer behind 2000’s cult classic Jennifer’s Body — and will serve as Zelda Williams’ directorial debut. It will follow an unpopular and completely misunderstood high schooler who suddenly re-animates a good-looking Victorian corpse. She will then start to rebuild the corpse into the man of her dreams, using only a broken tanning bed in her home. 

Rated PG-13 for “violent content” and “bloody images,” the film’s official synopsis reads: “A coming of rage love story about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.”

Besides Newton (Freaky) and Sprouse (Riverdale), the rest of the Lisa Frankenstein cast includes Carla Gugino (The Haunting of Hill House), Liza Soberano (Alone/Together), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things), and Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room).

Past Lives and Love to Hate You actor Teo Yoo has joined the second season of Netflix’s The Recruit. He will join main lead Noah Centineo as a series regular, portraying a highly-skilled NIS agent “with a subversive sense of humor.”

The award-winning actor’s film and television credits include Pawn, New Year Blues, Decision to Leave, Vagabond, and Money Game. Yoo also received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Celine Song’s Past Lives. 

What is The Recruit about? 

The first season of The Recruit began with CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Centineo) coming across a letter that threatens to reveal the secrets of his agency. Relatively new to the job, Owen soon finds himself thrown into a lethal world of international espionage. 

Season 2 will reportedly put Owen into yet another dangerous situation in South Korea, where he will discover that the threat is closer than he thinks. 

Per the show’s logline, The Recruit “centers around Owen Hendricks, a young CIA lawyer whose first week on the job turns upside down when he discovers a threatening letter by former asset Max Meladze (Laura Haddock), who plans to expose the agency unless they exonerate her of a serious crime. Owen quickly becomes entangled in a dangerous and often absurd world of power politics and mischievous players, as he travels the world in hopes of completing his assignment and making a mark at the CIA.”

Created and executive produced by Alexi Hawley, the espionage series’ first season also starred Aarti Mann as Violet Ebner, Colton Dunn as Lester Kitchens, Fivel Stewart as Hannah Copeland, Kristian Bruun as Janus Ferber, and Vondie Curtis-Hall as Walter Nyland. 

Besides starring as the show’s main lead, Centineo also served as The Recruit’s executive producer alongside Hawley, Doug Liman, Gene Klein, David Bartis, Adam Ciralsky, Charlie Ebersol, and Julian Holmes. The show’s producer is eOne.

No release date has been set yet for The Recruit Season 2, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
