Critically acclaimed animator Don Hertzfeldt has announced that his next film will officially be released in 2024. It also has a name — Me.

Hertzfeldt didn’t go into any detail about what the film would be about, but did joke that it would be coming “at long last” next year. Hertzfeldt’s last film, World of Tomorrow – Episode Three: The Absent Destinations of David Prime, was released in 2020, and was the third film in his World of Tomorrow series.

Hertzfeldt is an accomplished animator, and is often cited as one of the most influential animators of his time. Eight of his short films have competed at the Sundance Film Festival, a festival record, and he is the only filmmaker to have won the Sundance Film festival’s Grand Jury Prize for Short Film twice.

His best known works include It’s Such a Beautiful Day, the World of Tomorrow series, and Rejected. Hertzfeldt has been nominated for two Academy Awards, both for Best Animated Short Films, in his career.

The recently released adaptation of The Color Purple is produced by Oprah Winfrey, who starred in the 1985 Steven Spielberg film. Another star from that film appears in the 2023 rendition, which Winfrey says was a great Easter egg for fans.

In the newest film, Whoopi Goldberg — who starred in the 1985 film as Celie Harris Johnson — briefly appears in the 2023 version as a midwife who helps young Celie (played by Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) give birth to her second child.

According to Winfrey in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Winfrey said that it was a great homage to Whoopi, as well as a great nod to the fans.

“[We] just thought it was a wonderful Easter egg for audiences who have appreciated the film over the years, for the diehards,” Winfrey said. “And we also thought it was a lovely homage to Whoopi.”

Winfrey also said that she declined to appear in the film, despite also starring in the 1985 version as Sofia.

“Actually, I thought about it, it would’ve been good in the church scene, but I thought it would also be distracting when Sofia is getting married that if the old original Sofia was just one of the people in the church, and then they were shooting that in the middle of Georgia when COVID was [spreading] like, ‘OK, well I ain’t sitting in that church all day anyway,’” said Winfrey. “And also I just think it’s more special that it’s just Whoopi.”

Actress Jessica Chastain has shot down any rumors of her potentially being in the upcoming film adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Speaking to E! News recently, Chastain was asked about the fact that she has become a big fan-favorite choice to play the role of Celia St. James in the movie. Despite the hopes of fans, though, Chastain said that it there is absolutely “zero possibility” it happens.

“But I love how excited the fans are,” Jessica said. “When I was working on Broadway, every single day, they’d be outside, when I was signing, with the books. I just love how wonderful that fan base is.”

The actress added that she looks “forward to watching it and I’m sorry to disappoint everyone out there!”

The news comes following Chastain previously being open to the idea, saying that she had seen the buzz online and telling Netflix “sure, send me a script” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live in January. Unfortunately, it seems like Chastain has fully decided now, and won’t be in the flm.

What is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo about?

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo centers around a legendary Hollywood actress who has enlisted an up-and-coming reporter to tell her life story. The film will chronicle Evelyn Hugo’s rise to fame during the Golden Age of Hollywood, as well as the sacrifices she made to get to the top.

The film is based on the hit historical fiction novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which was published in 2017.

It will be written by Liz Tegelaar (Little Fires Everywhere), who is also working on Malibu Rising for Hulu — another Reid adaptation. It will be executive produced by Reid and Margaret Chernin, with Liza Chasin of 3Dot Productions and Brad Mendelsohn of Circle of Confusion set as producers.

Michael Mann‘s Ferrari was originally not planned to be a theatrical release, according to a recent report from Deadline.

In a report on the box office round-up for the week of Christmas 2023, Deadline noted that Ferrari was originally set to be released as a streaming title on Showtime. However, production companies A24 and NEON got into a bidding war over the theatrical rights to the film, with NEON eventually winning with a $15 million bid.

“It is the summer of 1957,” the official synopsis reads. “Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.”

Driver plays Enzo Ferrari in the movie, while Cruz plays his wife Laura. The movie also stars Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, Sarah Gadon as Linda Christian, Gabriel Leone as Alfonso de Portago, Jack O’Connell as Peter Collins, Patrick Dempsey as Piero Trauffi, and Ben Collins as Stirling Moss.

A new The Iron Claw clip was released by A24 this week, previewing a brief moment of happiness between the Von Erich family as they party at a wedding.

The clip is brief and shows the group of brothers all dancing while at Kevin Von Erich’s (played by Zac Efron) wedding to Pam Adkisson (Lily James). The group dances to John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” with each performing part of a choreographed dance.

With Daisy Ridley set to return to the world of Star Wars, fans are wondering if they’ll see other sequel movie stars appear. Adam Driver was asked about it, but quickly shot down any chances of a return.

During a recent appearance on the Smartless podcast, Driver was asked about the possibility of returning to the iconic franchise. The actor acknowledged that things were happening, but that he wasn’t involved with it at all.

“They’re doing stuff, but not with me. I’m not doing it anymore,” Driver said, simply replying “yeah” when asked if it was because the story of Kylo Ren had been all but concluded.

The Star Wars sequel films are a polarizing trilogy

The Star Wars sequel films are a divisive group of films, with Driver recently saying that the overall arc and plan for Kylo Ren changed a bit as the films kept going.

“I had an overall arc in mind that [Abrams] wanted to do, which then changed, but his idea was almost the opposite journey of Vader. Where Vader starts the most confident, the most committed to the dark side, and by the last movie he’s the most vulnerable and weak,” Driver said in an interview on The Rich Eisen Show. “And he wanted to start it the opposite, where this character was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of the three movies, would be most committed to the dark side. So I tried to keep that arc in mind, regardless if that wound up not being the journey anyway, because it changed, obviously.”

Driver said the changes to Kylo Ren began in The Last Jedi when writer-director Rian Johnson “took it into a different direction,” which Driver said did still align with the character overall. However, the arc shifted even more in The Rise of Skywalker, as Ben Solo’s redemption was never part of the original plan.

“Then the last one, it changed into being about them, and the dyad, and things like that,” Drive continued. “And evolving into Ben Solo, that was never part of it. He was Ben Solo from the beginning, but it was never a version where we actually see Ben Solo when I first signed up for it.”

Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman is heralded as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time, but according to the screenwriter for Burton’s Batman Returns, he isn’t a fan at all.

Daniel Waters, the man who wrote the screenplay for the hit 1992 sequel, recently spoke with IndieWire, where he revealed that he thinks the 1989 Batman “sucks.”

In a separate interview with World of Reel, Waters went more into detail on just why he didn’t like the 1989 Batman, and apparently, he wasn’t the only one who wasn’t a fan. Waters said that Burton also didn’t love the movie and also took digs at the scene of Jack Nicholson as the Joker dancing up the stairs to a Prince song.

“[Tim Burton] was not crazy about Batman. And I wasn’t crazy about it either,” said Waters. “It had great production design and all that, but I didn’t like the movie…That scene where Jack [Nicholson’s] going up the stairs to a s— Prince song, spray painting art is the height of anti-entertainment.”

Waters also briefly touched on what his original plans for 1992’s Batman Returns were. The writer revealed that the film was originally set to open with a Batman logo, only to pan out and reveal an in-universe store selling Batman merchandise, a joke at the expense of how big of a merchandising juggernaut the original Batman film was.

However, Waters reveals that star Michael Keaton ended up convincing him to cut the section from the film.

“[Michael] Keaton said, ‘This is very clever. Cut it,’” Waters recalled.

Former President of the United States Donald Trump denied rumors and claims that he bullied himself into the hit Christmas film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

In a lengthy post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump acknowledged comments made by director Christopher Columbus that claim that Trump forced his way into the film.

According to Columbus speaking to Business Insider, Trump wouldn’t let the crew use the Plaza Hotel — which he owned at the time — unless he was put in the movie, a claim that Trump says is not true, and in fact, the opposite of what he says happened.

Trump says his cameo is part of what makes movie a success

“30 years ago (how time flies!), Director Chris Columbus, and others, were begging me to make a cameo appearance in ‘Home Alone 2,’ ” Trump wrote. “They rented the Plaza Hotel in New York, which I owned at the time. I was very busy, and didn’t want to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history! That little cameo took off like a rocket and the movie was a big success, and still is, especially around Christmastime. People call me whenever it is aired.”

The post goes on to say that his cameo is what made the movie a success, and if they didn’t want him, they could have cut him out of the movie.

“Now, however, 30 years later, Columbus…put out a statement that I bullied myself into the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth,” Trump wrote. “That cameo helped make the movie a success, but if they felt bullied, or didn’t want me, why did they put me in, and keep me there, for over 30 years? Because I was, and still am, great for the movie, that’s why! Just another Hollywood guy from the past looking for a quick fix of Trump publicity for himself!”

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was released in 1992, and was a smash hit upon its release. The film grossed over $359 million worldwide at the box office, and was the third-highest grossing film of 1992.

A new live-action fan film based on the hit Batman Beyond franchise has released a teaser trailer, previewing a new story written about Terry McGinnis.

The new film, titled Batman Beyond: Year One, is from Lumis Entertainment. The trailer for the film features a few mainstay characters from the world of Batman, including Terry McGinnis, The Joker, The Royal Flush Gang, and a few other Easter Eggs.

The film is finished with production, but is currently seeking additional funding in the post-production process. The team behind the movie have launched an Indiegogo campaign looking to raise funds.

The voice actor for Kratos in the modern era of games, Christopher Judge, says that he won’t ever voice a younger version of the character for any God of War game.

During a recent live stream event with YouTuber AbdBay and Streamily, Judge spoke about his preparation for the character. Judge said that he’s always tried to make the character of Kratos his own, and that he never watched any scenes from past games. He did this out of respect for Terrence C. Carson, the original voice actor of Kratos.

Judge didn’t look into any old God of War games in order to make the character his own

“I never watched any of the scenes from the earlier (God of War games) because [Terrence C. Carson]’s so great, and I thought it would be a disservice to try to voice match him or anything, nor did they ask for it,” Judge said. “From the very beginning, it was about making it my own.”

Judge went on to say that, recently, he was offered a role that would have seen him portray a younger Kratos, but that he turned it down immediately.

“They wanted me to somewhat match the voice of that character, and I said, ‘Absolutely not,’” said Judge. “I love this dude. That would be such a slight. We are not celebrated for what we, as individuals, bring to stuff. That’s across the board, no matter what you do. I just think it’s inherently wrong to try to commandeer something else that someone has already established.”

It’s unclear exactly what role Judge is talking about, but many fans believe it to be the recently released God of War Ragnarok DLC, Valhalla, which ends with Kratos coming face-to-face with an illusion of a younger version of himself.

Former President of the United States Barack Obama has created a tradition of releasing various lists of his favorite things for any given year. This week, he released his list of favorite movies of 2023.

Obama’s list includes some award-season favorites

Taking to Twitter, Obama shared his list, which started with three films — Rustin, Leave the World Behind, and American Symphony — from Higher Ground Productions, a production company founded in 2018 by Barack and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama. The 10 other films listed include some award-season favorites, as well as some surprise entries.

At the top of his list, Obama put the Christmas comedy-drama film The Holdovers, starring Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Dominic Sessa. Elsewhere on the list are hit films like Oppenheimer and American Fiction, as well as some films like Blackberry, Anatomy of a Fall, Monster, and more.

Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys have released a new sixth scale figure from Marvel’s What If…? Season 2, highlighting the Sakaarian armored variant of Iron Man.

The new figure is inspired by the Season 2 look of Tony Stark, which sees the billionaire making a suit out of trash from the planet of Sakaar. The figure features a hand-painted Tony Stark headsculpt and comes with magnetic LED light-up face armor. The suit stands at over 14 inches tall and also features an LED light-up chest piece.

The figure is available to pre-order now on Sideshow’s website for $495. It is currently set to release some time between October 2024 and March 2025, so fans will have some time to decide on whether or not they want to pick up the newest Iron Man suit.

What is What If…? Season 2 about?

“The Watcher continues the journey as our guide through the vast multiverse, introducing brand-new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” reads the Season 2 synopsis. “The animated anthology series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles.”

The Iron Claw director Sean Durkin recently revealed that one specific family member was left out of the film due to things getting too tragic in the story.

Speaking to The Los Angeles Times, Durkin revealed that Chris Von Erich — the youngest Von Erich who died by suicide at the age of 21 in 1993 — was originally in the film right up until production began. However, Durkin felt that the film was already too sad and that the inclusion of Chris would be “one more tragedy that the film couldn’t really withstand.”

“There was a repetition to it, and it was one more tragedy that the film couldn’t really withstand,” said Durkin. “I honestly don’t know if it would have gotten made.”

Chris Von Erich was the smallest of his brothers, standing at just 5-foot 5-inches tall, and suffering from things like asthma and a brittle bone condition that made wrestling hard. Still, Chris did pursue wrestling alongside the rest of his family, but began experiencing depression and battling drug issues following the death of Mike Von Erich in 1987.

“Chris was in the script for five years,” Durkin said, while noting that “on a human level,” cutting Chris was “an impossible choice” that he fought against years, but ended up having to do.

A new report suggests that planned Grand Theft Auto V story DLC was scrapped due to internal rifts at Rockstar Games, as well as the sudden emergence and rise in popularity of GTA Online.

A new YouTube video from Mors Mutual Insurance (a reference to the insurance company that appears throughout the Grand Theft Auto series) details some of the information that was leaked as part of a hack on Rockstar Games.

While it was known for years that GTA 5 did have story DLC planned that was ultimately scrapped, the report suggests that creative differences, as well as the success of GTA Online, played a large role.

The video notes that disagreements between Rockstar founders the Houser brothers and Leslie Benzies, the former president of Rockstar North and a producer on Grand Theft Auto V, eroded any chance of story DLC. Emails leaked by hackers indicate that the Houser brothers were interested in releasing more single-player projects and content, while Benzies was pushing for more live service and online projects.

The disagreement became so severe that Benzies eventually took a hiatus from Rockstar before leaving his role and suing Take-Two (a settlement was reached out of court before things went any further).

Following the split, Rockstar began development on Red Dead Redemption 2 while still supporting GTA Online in the process. As a result, however, single-player projects like Bully 2, a new Midnight Club, and story-related DLC for GTA 5 were never pursued.

Rockstar hack comes after other high-profile companies were targeted

More leaked content includes GTA 5’s canceled single-player DLC and a GTA 6 PC script as well as miscellaneous game content like a lock-picking mechanic, Bully 2 concepts, and even some assets from canceled PS3 exclusive, Agent.

Currently, it’s unclear who is behind the leak, with Twitter users claiming that the source is a “random British guy” who has a history of hacking and has been sued by Rockstar before. The news comes just a week after one of the hackers responsible for the Grand Theft Auto VI hack was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order for his role in the crime.

The news also comes following the large-scale hack of Insomniac Games, which saw details of the developers’ plans come to light. Other companies, like Ubisoft, have also been the target of hackers attempting to release information.

DC Studios co-CEO and director of Superman: Legacy James Gunn has updated fans on when they’ll be seeing the official Superman suit, and it won’t be any time before the movie begins filming.

In a few responses to fans on the social media platform Threads, Gunn said there was a “zero-point-zero” percent chance that the suit for the upcoming film will be revealed before production begins in March. When asked why, Gunn simply said that they don’t even begin filming for two months, so there wasn’t a reason to show it off just yet.

In response to another fan noting that fans already know what Superman’s suit looks like, Gunn hinted that they didn’t. “Do you? Are there trunks or no trunks,” asked Gunn in a joking reference to the ongoing debate of whether or not the Superman in the upcoming film would adhere to the more classic look of red trunks or not.

Who will be in Superman: Legacy?

The titular role in Superman: Legacy is being played by David Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician), while Lois Lane will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan. They’re joined by Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and more. The film is set to release on July 11, 2025.

The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.

As rumors continue to persist about a potential Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger, one analyst believes both companies coming together would be bad for both involved.

A recent report from THR rounded up a handful of reports from financial analysts who wrote about the deal. While a handful of them were breaking down how the financials and structure could work, TD Cowen analyst Doug Creutz noted a handful of obstacles that stood in front of the deal in his report titled “We Have a Hard Time Seeing a Paramount Merger Happening.”

“We have a very hard time believing the current FTC/DOJ, which has been very aggressive in combating industry consolidation, would give this deal a pass,” said Creutz. “It would involve merging two of the five remaining major movie studios, two major television studios, and would create a very high concentration of linear network ownership (which last we checked is still a very large and EBITDA-positive business even given cord-cutting), including a significant consolidation of major sports rights.”

Outside of regulatory hurdles, Creutz also claimed that the deal would be “a mistake” for Warner Bros. Discovery, noting that scaling up wouldn’t help the company and that Paramount’s lack of premium content wouldn’t do much to entice new users.

“Scale isn’t the solution to their problems, which are all about industry structure (if scale was a magic bullet, Disney’s stock wouldn’t be down more than 50 percent from its all-time high),” Creutz wrote. “Paramount would bring a lot of content ballast to the table, but much less in terms of premium, long-tail franchises, and WBD already has plenty of breadth of content.”

Ultimately, Creutz’s recommendation was that both companies bundle together their streaming platforms as one product while still remaining separate companies.

What do we know about a potential Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger?

Earlier this month, Axios and Variety reported that the two company’s were in discussions on the potential of a merger between both companies. Axios notes that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish met with one another on Tuesday in New York City.

The details of the meeting are unknown, but the report mentions that the pair “discussed ways their companies could complement one another,” including the idea of having one singular streaming service that could better compete against platforms like Netflix or Disney+.

As of now, it’s unclear just how a merger would go, but Axios’ report claims that Warner Bros. Discovery buying Paramount Global and its parent company, National Amusements Inc., has been discussed and is “on the table.”

The X-Men are officially coming back in the form of the Disney+ series X-Men ’97, and ahead of its release, Marvel Comics is releasing a prequel series to lead up to the premiere of the show.

The new comic series, also titled X-Men ’97, is a four-part series that will serve as a companion story to the upcoming television series. The first issue will hit comic book stands on March 27, 2024, with each new issue releasing after.

The books will be written by Steve Foxe (Dead X-Men, Dark X-Men), with art by Salva Espín. The prelude will showcase what the ’90s X-Men cast has been up to in the time prior to their return.

“Startling revelations here lead directly into the hotly anticipated new series—fans won’t want to miss out,” reads the official synopsis for the comic series.

On writing the series, Steve Foxe said, “There’s a very good chance I wouldn’t be writing comics today if not for the impact X-Men: The Animated Series had on me as a kid—heck, the voice actors from the show are still the voices I hear when I read the comics today!”

What do we know about X-Men ’97?

The official synopsis for X-Men ‘97 reads: “Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all.”

X-Men ’97 will be written by Beau DeMayo, who wrote The Witcher‘s animated spin-off Nightmare of the Wolf for Netflix, and will retain the original theme music from the iconic X-Men animated series of the past.

Alongside new information from the series, DeMayo also confirmed that a second season was already in development, although no new information for that has been revealed or discussed.

Jessica Parker Kennedy‘s portrayal of Medusa in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians is different from the way the character is portrayed in the original film. It’s a decision that author and creator Rick Riordan wanted to make sure happened.

Speaking to Variety, Riordan and Kennedy spoke about the version of Medusa that appears in the series, and is more in line with the Greek mythology version of the character. In Greek mythology, Medusa is a human who takes a vow of celibacy in devotion to Athena.

However, she later enters into a relationship with the god Poseidon, in which the two become sexual. While never explicitly stated, various interpretations paint the encounter as nonconsensual, something that Kennedy did tap into while playing the character.

“[Co-creator and co-showrunner Jon Steinberg] wrote a story of [Medusa] thinking that [Poseidon] was someone she could trust, and he broke that trust,” Kennedy said. “She was feeling safe, and then the situation turned unsafe,” she says. “So I chose to play that she was a victim of rape and total abandonment, not understanding why Athena would turn on her.”

Rick Riordan wanted to acknowledge the abuse of power in mythological stories

Unlike the version of Medusa that appears in the 2005 novel and 2010 film, which shows Medusa as mostly a villain who can turn people into stone, the series portrays Medusa as more of a complicated figure, with Percy’s mother (Virginia Kull) telling Percy that “not everyone who looks like a hero is a hero, and not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster” when the pair see a statue of Perseus — who Percy is named after — holding the head of Medusa.

As far as Riordan — who wrote the Percy Jackson series and co-created the series — is concerned, there are plenty of different stories centered on Greek mythological figures, but the topic of abuse of power is always present.

“There are many versions from ancient times of what happened in that temple with Medusa and Poseidon and Athena,” said Riordan. “Who’s to blame? Who’s the abuser? What’s the real story? It’s fiction, but it certainly is important to acknowledge that there is abuse involved here. Abuse of power.”

The upcoming Joker: Folie á Deux won’t take place in the mainline DC Universe. However, it also won’t use the DC Elseworlds intro, according to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.

In a recent reply to a fan on the Instaram-based social media platform Threads, Gunn confirmed that Joker: Folie á Deux won’t be using the company’s new Elseworlds logo or intro for the film. According to Gunn, the reason is simply that the logo won’t be used on anything until the films that he and Peter Safran got to work on begin coming out.

“Nope,” Gunn said on Threads in regard to the logo being used. “Won’t debut until the films we’ve worked on.”

Gunn and Safran’s DCU officially kicks off in 2024 with an animated Creature Commandos series, which does not yet have an official release that. Following that, Superman: Legacy, which is written and directed by Gunn, flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.

Projects like the upcoming sequel to The Batman, The Batman – Part II, will seemingly fall under the DC Elseworlds category, while Gunn recently confirmed Reeves’ upcoming Arkham Asylum series will be a part of the DCU. Gunn also said DC Studios plans to make more animated projects like 2023’s Merry Little Batman that fall outside of the DCU continuity.

Who is in Joker: Folie à Deux?

Phoenix reprises his Academy Award-winning role of Arthur Fleck/Joker for the sequel. Lady Gaga, who plays Joker’s love interest Dr. Harleen Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn, will star alongside Phoenix. For the sequel, Zazie Beetz returns as Arthur’s former neighbor, Sophie Dumond. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey were also cast in undisclosed roles.

Phillips is back to direct Joker: Folie à Deux from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver. Released in 2019, Joker became a smash hit, grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, Joker won two Oscars – Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024.

Colman Domingo is one of the more successful actors working in Hollywood today, but that wasn’t always the case. According to the actor, he nearly gave it all up after being turned down for a hit HBO series.

Speaking to The New York Times (via Variety) in a recent profile, Domingo recalled a time where he was having trouble finding big roles and began auditioning for roles that might not offer many lines (known as “under-fives” roles for their lack of lines). One of those auditions was for the hit HBO drama series Boardwalk Empire.

According to Domingo, the role was for the maître d’ at a Black-owned nightclub, and the actor went all out. At the callback audition, Domingo wore a tuxedo and even performed some singing and rap dances. Despite impressing those behind the show, however, the profile notes that Domingo was passed on for the role due to the producers of the show wanting someone more “light-skinned” for historical accuracy’s sake.

Domingo nearly quit acting after the decision

The auditions went so well that both Domingo and his agent thought this would be a “big break” for the actor. However, a historical researcher on the show told producers that maître d’s for nightclubs of the time were typically “light-skinned,” meaning Domingo didn’t fit the role, forcing the show to pass on him.

According to Domingo, the decision made him nearly lose his mind, and almost had him ready to quit acting forever. “That’s when I lost my mind,” Domingo said, with his agent noting that Domingo told him that “I can’t take it anymore, I think this is going to kill me.”

Thankfully for Domingo, he didn’t end up quitting on his pursuit to be an actor, and the patience paid off. Now, Domingo is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood and has appeared in a ton of high-profile films like Lincoln, Selma, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He’s also an Emmy-Award-winning actor for his performance as the recovering drug addict Ali in the HBO hit series Euphoria.
