Lionsgate has closed its acquisition of Entertainment One/eOne after reports of the deal “intensifying” emerged all the way back in August.

Variety has reported that the $375 million acquisition will bring “6,500 film and television titles” from Hasbro to Lionsgate, including the popular series The Rookie and Yellowjackets. That being said, some major IP like Power Rangers and Transformers are not included, though movie development rights for Monopoly are notably part of the deal. The outlet notes that the sale is also subject to purchase price adjustments.

Jon Feltheimer, the CEO of Lionsgate, released a statement about the acquisition closing:

“The eOne acquisition concludes a busy year in which we continued to execute our strategy of strengthening our studio business as we prepare for the separation of Lionsgate and Starz into pure play standalone companies,” he said. “As we’ve conducted our integration planning, our analysis has reaffirmed our conviction that eOne will be a valuable and highly accretive addition to our business. We are pleased to welcome eOne’s talented group of employees to our Lionsgate family.”

When did Hasbro originally buy eOne?

Hasbro bought eOne in 2019 for $4 billion back in 2019. In 2021, the company sold eOne’s music business to the private equity firm Blackstone for $385 million.

Disney has revealed the Percy Jackson and the Olympians viewership numbers a week after the show’s debut on Disney+ as well as Hulu.

Variety has reported that the first episode of the live-action series adaptation of the first of Rick Riordan’s popular novels attained 13.3 million viewers over its first six days. This falls just under Ahsoka’s 14 million viewers within its first five days, though the outlet notes Percy Jackson likely has a slightly younger demographic of viewers than the Star Wars show.

“The live-action series tells the fantastical story of the titular 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt,” reads the synopsis. “Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.”

The Rebel Moon Part 1 Netflix viewership numbers have been revealed for Zack Snyder’s space opera movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has garnered 23.9 million views in just over three days. The outlet says that it’s a decent start for the movie, which is set to receive an R-rated director’s cut in the future.

Rebel Moon was directed by Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, based on a story by Snyder and Johnstad. It stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, Ed Skrein as Admiral Atticus Noble, Charlie Hunnam as Kai, Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, Djimon Hounsou as General, Staz Nair as Tarak, Doona Bae as Nemesis, Ray Fisher as Darrian Bloodaxe, and newcomer E. Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder has revealed which four movies are his absolute favorite, and they span a wide range of genres.

Letterboxd asked the filmmaker his four favorite movies and posted a video to Twitter of him answering the question. Snyder revealed that his four favorite movies are Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, All That Jazz, Excalibur, and Blue Velvet.

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope was directed by George Lucas and came out in 1977, while All That Jazz was released in 1979 and was directed by Bob Fosse. Excalibur was directed by John Boorman and released in 1981, while Blue Velvet came out in 1986 and was helmed by David Lynch.

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with The Boys in the Boat director George Clooney and star Joel Edgerton about the biographical sports movie. The duo discussed the true story and the experience of working with a director who also acts. The film is set to debut in theaters on Monday, December 25.

“The Boys in the Boat is a sports drama based on the #1 New York Times bestselling non-fiction novel written by Daniel James Brown,” reads the film‘s synopsis. “The film, directed by George Clooney, is about the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. This inspirational true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.”

Tyler Treese: George, one of my favorite aspects was the use of the sportscaster during the races. There was a real artistry to broadcasting during that time. And it doesn’t just set up like the stakes of the race. It really gives a view into the world and politics and everything that was going on at the time. Can you just speak to using that as a narrative device?

George Clooney: Well, first of all, you have to have somebody who can speak in the time in a way without sounding like, “Whatever!” You have to have it not feel like a caricature. Interestingly, the character of Royal Brougham, who’s the broadcaster who does most of the stuff, writes this sort of poetic stuff and is a legend in Seattle. They have buildings named after it and stuff. So, it was always a choice. It’s hard to set up a narrative on what these guys are doing and where they are without somebody telling you.

The best person to tell you is a sportscaster. They’re the ones when you watch the wide world of sports, and you’re watching skiing. You don’t know much about skiing, and they’re telling you, “Well, when he gets to that slalom, if he gets there by that period of time, he is going to win.” You need somebody to tell you where we are in the race, somehow, and where we are in life — because he does that, too. He talks about four kids coming from a poor place. So it was always a plan to use the narrator in it. It just felt like a perfect way to keep the story moving.

Tyler Treese: Joel, Al Ulbrickson is a legendary figure for your performance. Did you try to look back at videos or talk to any family or people who knew him? What was your prep like?

Joel Edgerton: The only things you can really access are bits of information and a few stats and some beautiful photographs, in which he’s dressed very well.

George Clooney: He’s dressed well. [Laughs].

Joel Edgerton: Which we tried to replicate. Jenny did an amazing job, actually. But no, it was really just about reading the book and reading about qualities of his and starting to build from that, plus the screenplay of trying to service the movie in the best way possible.

The beauty of not being, with all respect, encumbered by him being an iconic worldwide iconic figure … that it could really be me plus the qualities that I could bring that I knew of him … I didn’t have any roadmap because, sadly, there’s no real footage of moving or audio footage of him.

George, what blew me away after I saw the movie was doing research into the real history. There are so many moments where you would figure it was dramatized, but everything actually happened. When you were actually looking into the history, were you blown away when you saw the adversity that the humans and the team all overcame?

George Clooney: Well, it was kind of crazy because, if you were watching this film or you’re reading this script and you see, “Oh, the cow coach gives them the money and they didn’t have the money,” and, “Oh, the kid got so sick he lost 15 pounds before the big race.” Or,” They put them on the outside lane and they didn’t hear the gun go off.” All of it happened.

If you’d read that script and it was a made-up story, you’d go, “You can’t put all these in it — it’s just not realistic.” So that’s what was fun about it. It’s also a responsibility, because you have to try to make it cinematic and not feel goofy along the way. But the truth is, we had really wonderful actors to carry me through that.

Joel, when you’re working with a director that has an acting background, is there something special about that? How does that work?

Joel Edgerton: [Laughs]. Yeah, you just don’t listen! Yeah, no. I mean, look, I was there on the first week just watching George walk around going, “Shouldn’t you be in front of the camera?” [Laughs]. And then, that gave me this really cool evidence, which I sort of thought about beforehand. What makes a person spend time crafting something when they could easily just jump from set to set, picking up bags of cash as an actor? It means that he really cared about this — particularly because he wasn’t going to be in front of the camera, too. That the passion was there to just tell this story.

The worst case scenario to be directed by an actor is that an actor-director comes up to you every moment and goes, “Let me just show you how I would do it,” which can happen. It didn’t happen, thankfully, in this, but if it did, it probably wouldn’t have been a bad thing anyway.

George Clooney: All I would say is, I’ve been directed by actors before, too, and I always find there’s a bit of a shorthand. I can look at him and know what he’s doing and he can look at me and know what I need. As opposed to, some directors will come over to you and they’ll talk to us like we’re idiots. They’ll go, “I think that the reason you’re delivering pizza is because your parents were alcoholics. [Laughs]. That’s why you become a pizza delivery guy.”

For me, I’m like, “I just need you to ring the doorbell and say ‘pizza.’ I say to him, ‘Pizza,’ and he goes, ‘Got it.'” You know? It’s a huge blessing, actually, to have actors who — he directs. So when I say to him, “Okay, so I need us to get to there and then and walk out the door.” He goes, “Where do you want me to be?” And I go, “I need you to get over there.” He goes, “Done.” And that helps.

The Iron Claw star Zac Efron has reflected on his experience working with the late Matthew Perry on the comedy movie 17 Again.

In a Variety video that tested Efron’s ability to recall some of his memorable lines from throughout his career, the actor recalled his time with Matthew Perry and the impact the Friends star had on him.

“I had the benefit of being able to watch Matthew my whole life before that movie started,” Efron explained. “It’s not like we hammered home how to do the jokes or the character. I had to make it true to myself and be able to make it happen. But there’s those things that Matthew Perry just invented. The way he kind of just brought humor to camera, they’re like ingrained in me. I think they’re a huge part of why I’m here, is comedic timing from Matthew Perry for years and years and years.

“I could kind of go though a scene in my mind and be like, ‘Oh, he’d definitely do this, oh, he’d definitely do that.’ That was really all it took — that, and putting yourself in your dad’s shoes, which was really crazy. Yeah, thanks, Matthew.”

Spencer Legacy: Ray, I read that you did a lot of your own stunts in the movie despite not having a ton of experience with the combat-heavy stunt work. What did you find most rewarding about getting in there and being so involved?

Ray Fisher: I think the most rewarding thing is getting it right. [Laughs]. I have a profound respect for the stunt crew and stunt coordinators and all things stunts. It takes a lot of discipline, and it takes a lot of coordination. I’ve got discipline, for sure, but the coordination I was a bit lacking. So, I appreciated their patience in helping to guide me through the process.

Cleopatra, what’s interesting about the Bloodaxe siblings is they’re very close, but they come to different conclusions in Part One. Your character seems less likely to make a decision based on emotions. Could you speak to that leadership element that you portray?

Cleopatra Coleman: Absolutely, yeah. Devra is someone who … she thinks with her head. [Laughs].

Ray Fisher: Not the heart. [Laughs].

Cleopatra Coleman: She leads with her head. She’s cerebral and she’s strategic, and her brother more leads from the heart. And that balance and that leadership … we fulfill each other’s … it’s the yang and the yang, I suppose. Devra’s a survivor, and she’s someone who is willing to make sacrifices. Even if she feels an emotional pull, she’s going to do what’s right in terms of strategy, always.

E, your character is shown as being very deeply loyal and believes in the rebel cause. Can you speak to portraying a character that’s really motivated by betterment and the courage that comes from that?

E. Duffy: Yeah, it was such an honor to play Milius for that reason. I think the script really gave me an opportunity to dig down deep and ask what that means for me, you know? To be part of the Bloodaxe revolution and look up to Cleo and Ray as I do all that was very, very transferrable for me. [Laughs].

Ray, Zack Snyder’s really championed you as an actor and been in your corner. What did it mean to get to work with him again?

Ray Fisher: Oh, it was great. It’s coming home. It’s a full circle thing, and to be able to help him launch his baby — this new IP — into the world is a huge honor for me.

Cleopatra, what stood out about working with Ray as a scene partner?

Ray Fisher: Tell him how great we worked together! [Laughs].

Cleopatra Coleman: We worked great together. [Laughs]. No, we did. I mean, the rapport we have now is the rapport we had from the jump, right? I think we had coffee just to nerd out and talk about our favorite Lord of the Rings and Star Trek and all that stuff. That was really great and really easy. It was really cool for me, having someone like Ray. He’s worked with Zack, he’s done these kinds of movies before, and was really supportive. We’ve all been friends throughout the whole process, but it was so easy to create our sibling dynamic. Really easy.

E, there’s such a great ensemble assembled by the end. What did you like most about that group dynamic?

E. Duffy: I think the best thing about that group dynamic is that everyone has a really good sense of humor. [Laughs]. We all come at it from a little bit of a different place because we all have very different backgrounds in the movie, but also in real life, too. So it was very fun to just hang out and play off each other.

Zatanna writer and acclaimed director Emerald Fennell has confirmed that the DC movie is officially no longer happening.

On a recent episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Fennell spoke about the Zatanna movie that she had written a script for. After clearly confirming that the project is dead, the writer explained how she came to write the “reasonably demented” script and why the project ended up dying.

“No, it’s not happening,” Fennell stated. “So this was something I was working on before Promising Young Woman, and it was when J.J. Abrams had, I think, just arrived at Warner Bros. and was going to reboot the Dark Universe … and they were going to make this new kind of dark villain universe, or hero-villain universe. Because I love genre of all kinds so much … I [was] definitely interested.

“I don’t know a huge amount about the superhero genre. It’s not a genre that I naturally gravitate towards, so I was like, ‘How does one make a movie like that for people like me who maybe don’t know so much and wouldn’t necessarily buy a ticket the first time around?’ And Zatanna’s just a really, really cool character … I did write it, but it was complicated because I think the regime … it’s classic studio stuff … I wrote, in the end, a script that is reasonably demented — in a good way. But in the end, I think the whole universe … was changed. That’s fine. I love writing, I love working with people, so it was really fun to do … whether or not it would have been remotely makeable.”

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder explained the metaphor behind antagonist Atticus Noble’s blunt bone staff in the space opera movie.

Speaking with ComingSoon, Snyder was asked about creating the bone staff and how it worked in fight scenes. The filmmaker spoke about how the bone staff is meant to represent the Imperium and how it has mythological elements.

“I really love the idea. I mean, not to say it’s too heavy-handed of a metaphor, but that the Imperium is a blunt instrument,” Snyder explained. “They are not surgical. They are very heavy-handed. I just thought that this club was a hilarious weapon for Noble to have. Then, of course, it’s based on this mythological relic — long ago, baby Issa was carried across the desert by this creature that had this super long femur. That’s what that bone is. It’s almost like a Joseph-and-Mary-style story.

“But we went to that deep sort of storytelling devices that the weapons were even based on mythological elements that you wouldn’t even learn in the movie, but that was really fun. I do love that bone staff.”

Insomniac Games has released a statement about the cyberattack that took place earlier this week and ended up leaking sensitive details and the personal information of several employees.

On its official Twitter account, the studio posted an image containing a lengthy statement about the attack and the effects its had. Insomniac notes that the hack took an “emotional toll” on the developers and has been “extremely distressing,” but that like the titular character of Marvel’s Wolverine, the studio is “resilient” and will keep developing the title as planned.

“Thank you for the outpouring of compassion and unwavering support. It’s deeply appreciated,” the release reads. “We’re both saddened and angered about the recent criminal cyberattack on our studio and the emotional toll it’s taken on our dev team. We have focused inwardly for the last several days to support each other.

“We are aware that the stolen data includes personal information belonging to our employees, former employees, and independent contractors. It also includes early development details about Marvel’s Wolverine for PlayStation 5. We continue working quickly to determine what data was impacted. This experience has been extremely distressing for us.

“We want everyone to enjoy the games we develop as intended and as our players deserve. However, like Logan … Insomniac is resilient. Marvel’s Wolverine continues as planned. The game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development, as do all our plans. While we appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm, we will share official information about Marvel’s Wolverine when the time is right. On behalf of everyone at Insomniac, thank you for your ongoing support during this challenging time.”

When did the Insomniac ransom hack take place?

Last week, Insomniac Games was hit by a “Rhysida” ransomware attack. The hacker group apparently gave the studio seven days to respond while ransoming the date obtained from the hack for just over $2 million. Insomniac and Sony didn’t respond, and earlier this week on December 19, the data was released by the hacker group.

In addition to various internal details involving future games and expansions for game’s like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the personal details of current employees, former employees, and contractors was leaked, prompting widespread outrage online.

ComingSoon Senior Editor Spencer Legacy spoke with Rebel Moon stars Djimon Hounsou and Staz Nair about the latest Zack Snyder movie. The duo delved into about the different cultures showcased in the film and their respective characters. Rebel Moon – Part One is now playing in limited theaters and will be released on Netflix on Thursday, December 21.

“A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius,” reads the film’s synopsis. “The desperate civilians dispatch Kora, a young woman who has a mysterious past, to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them challenge the regent.”

Spencer Legacy: Djimon, General Titus is a character that’s carrying a lot of grief. He winds up being motivated not by a chance of redemption but by revenge. Can you speak to carrying these heavy themes in your performance?

Djimon Hounsou: These themes resonate very organically for me. These themes are themes that I feel in — terms of story for that matter — speak volumes of the indoctrination of my continent, Africa. For example, the geopolitical tentacles that have been holding that continent back, being the richest continent in the world, and yet cannot have anything to show for it. So that, in terms of story, was quite powerful and I felt very organically connected immediately with the story.

Staz, the taming the griffin scene is a really great introduction. Your character has this connection with animals and nature. What did you like most about how your character was introduced?

Staz Nair: That’s a good question. What did I like the most about him? I think his sensitivity. I think it would’ve been easy for Zack to have imagined him and myself to have performed him in such a way where he was a bit more brash, a bit more boisterous, a bit more externally masculine, for lack of a better term.

But what I loved about him and this relationship with the bird instantly gave me this room to create a far more calm, intuitive, kind of introspective and insular character, which goes against his physicality, you know? It also gives him a nice place to rise when you see him in battle because he’s fierce and very visceral, and it’s a wonderful journey for the spectators to see that this quiet man has a lot burning on the inside.

Djimon, you’ve been a part of some massive franchises in the past, and Rebel Moon has aspirations of launching a new one. What about this world really grabbed you and made you want to be a part of that on the ground floor?

Djimon Hounsou: Well, I think it’s the underlying messages. The carelessness of the treatment of our planet is one, the geopolitical interaction between various countries, but more importantly, one that keeps the continent of Africa always in check. Those two elements are quite relevant to our day-to-day living.

Staz Nair: And why we’re lucky enough to have him spearhead this together.

Djimon Hounsou: Yeah.

Staz, you speak a new language in the movie that blends Russian and Portuguese. Can you speak to blending your own culture with this new fictitious one?

Staz Nair: This is the wonderful thing about Zack, right? He gives us opportunities to personalize this. And my wife is Portuguese — well, she’s Portuguese-Angolan, actually, so we got to incorporate my love for life, which is my wife, with my love for art, which is just such a beautiful thing to be able to do, and such a thoughtful thing to be able to do…

We talk about how much he honors culture in this movie, you know? That instantly makes you, as a second generation Indian in the UK [and] as someone who’s always worked neither here nor there, getting someone who’s willing and open and wanting to represent you in a way and giving you freedom to represent in your own way is super cool, man.

Djimon Hounsou: The diverse world that he was able to create in bringing a cast from various parts of the globe were just a very powerful statement. A huge statement along with the story itself was very grounding. It didn’t seem foreign given the fact that we’re in space. But of course, space is a character that most of us were not familiar with in this story.

Staz Nair: I haven’t been there. [Laughs].

Djimon Hounsou: [Laughs]. But to add to something that Staz spoke about, the culture here also and the way that he embraced it allowed me to bring my culture to life in the story was also very poignant, you know? You would see that in Part Two. More in Part Two than you get on the first part.

One of the writers for the upcoming animated Marvel series Eyes of Wakanda has been announced just over a week after the show was revealed.

On a recent episode of Fat Man Beyond, hosts Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin came onto the topic of Eyes of Wakanda. Bernardin stated that he wrote two episodes of the Wakanda-focused show but that he couldn’t say much more about it.

“I wrote two episodes of it,” Bernardin revealed. “So I know some things about Eyes of Wakanda. I can’t say anything besides that or the snipers will get twitchy … The best part though, was, before I could talk about this at all, there was the Marvel Black Panther game that I worked on. I was like ‘I did a thing with Marvel’ and so people were like, ‘It must have been the game, right?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, it must have been the game.’ But, no, this was a pandemic gig. This was the reason why I couldn’t come back for Masters [of the Universe: Revelation] Season 2, because this swallowed my life for about nine months. But I can’t wait until you guys see it, because it’s so freaking dope.”

What is Eyes of Wakanda about?

“Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story,” the official description reads.

Early Mean Girls box office projections have been released, suggesting a great start for the movie adaptation of the hit musical, which itself was based on the 2004 film.

Deadline has reported that the upcoming adaptation is projected to have a $27 million opening across the four-day MLK holiday. The outlet notes that this is indeed a solid start for a musical comedy aimed at women, particularly post-Covid. This is especially impressive given the film was originally set to be a Paramount+ movie, with the pivot to a theatrical release only being revealed this past September.

Mean Girls is directed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne from a screenplay written by Fey, based on Fey’s Broadway musical adaptation of the 2004 movie. It stars Rapp as Regina George, Rice as Cady Heron, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis, Jaquel Spivey as Damian, Jenna Fischer as Ms. Heron, Busy Philipps as Mrs. George, Avantika as Karen, Mahi Alam as Kevin, Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners, Ashley Park as Madame Park, Connor Ratliff as Mr. Rapp, and Jon Hamm as Coach Carr.
